Anthony L. Panos, MD, MSc, FRCSC, FACS, is a Professor of Surgery and the Surgical Director of the Heart Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support Programs in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He has been actively involved in heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support devices, including ECMO, throughout his career.
Dr. Panos has extensive experience with myocardial protection and has conducted research in the physiology of cardioplegia. He has participated in clinical device trials of new LVAD devices, TAVR valves (including the PARTNER trial and CoreValve Pivotal trial), novel endovascular devices (TEVAR and EVAR grafts), and stem cell therapies.
Dedicated to education, Dr. Panos has been involved in medical school, residency, and postgraduate medical education, serving previously as a Program Director. He currently serves on the UNOS Minority Affairs Committee and the STS Inclusion and Belonging Workforce. In addition, he has been a grant reviewer for the American Heart Association and ISHLT, as well as a journal reviewer and member of editorial boards.
Dr. Panos takes great pride in teaching and strives to inspire young surgeons to pursue rewarding careers in the field. He believes the specialty continues to grow, offering exciting opportunities for advancement and innovation.
