Erin "Neely" Burns is a third-year medical student at William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Forensic Chemistry from the University of Mississippi. Before medical school, she worked as an ocular recovery technician with Southern Eye Bank and Mississippi Lions Eye Bank, gaining experience in surgical procurement and laboratory evaluation of donor tissue. Her research interests include transplant surgery, surgical innovation, and improving patient outcomes. She has co-authored publications in Eye Banking and Corneal Transplantation and Cureus, as well as presented her work at regional and national meetings. At WCUCOM, she has served in several leadership roles including VP II of the Student Government Association and VP of the Association of Women Surgeons chapter. She is a member of Sigma Sigma Phi and is actively engaged with serving her community. Recently, she was selected for the Student and Resident Scholars Committee for The American Journal of Surgery. Her long-term goals include pursuing a residency in general surgery through the 2027 Match, with an interest in transplant, pediatric, or rural surgery. Outside of medicine, she enjoys weightlifting, boxing, tennis, and spending time with her dogs.
